Street Dance Classes

Street dance is a form of dance that was created outside of the dance industry. Any open space will do for the development of such vernacular dance. This can be block parties, open air dances, parks, schools, yards, raves, nightclubs, etc. Many of the dances that are created in this way are related to the culture of the streets. The earliest form of this kind of dance was probably folk dance performed at outdoor festivals many centuries ago. American minorities are most associated with this form of dance. It is seen in the modern era mostly in this format.

The hip hop culture and resultant dances were all street dances. B-boying and Funk are all styles of dance that came from the streets of the large cities in the US. B-boying came from the streets of New York City and surrounding areas. It is more commonly known as break dancing. But among the originators of the dance in the 70's it has always been b-boying. It continues to be known by that name in the culture today. Funk comes from the streets of Los Angeles. It is very similar to b-boying. It is different in that the techniques are unique. It is also named differently to differentiate it from other forms of it from other areas.

House dance is another form of street dance. It is danced to house, disco, or techno music. It comes from Chicago but also was developed in the clubs of New York. These types of dance often develop more in clubs than on the actual streets. The borrowing and fusion of dance styles of the streets is common. The cultures meld into one another as they practice and perfect their dances. The entire group meets up in spaces for raves or in clubs. This is where they begin to influence one another. Dances of this kind all come from one overall culture that is composed of many smaller cultures and locations.

Performing of street dances is often impromptu. Battles are mini dance competitions that are held on the cuff or can be planned. This is a competition between styles or even competitors of the same style. Battles may also happen in this way at clubs, parties, and raves. Some choreographed dances are performed in formal spaces. This is far less common than the impromptu performances and is out of character for the genre, but is nonetheless amazing displays of skill and talent.
