Performance is the art of dancers. The performing arts use the artist's body, face, and presence as the medium for portraying the art rather than paint, clay, or wood that other artists use. Dancing by itself is fun and good exercise but it is incomplete without performing. The stage is home to the performing arts. Dance, music, drama, circus, and theater are all performing arts and each has a special way of turning the stage into a magical place. The performing arts require years of study to master. Most successful and professional performing artists have spent their lives studying their art. Some even attend specialty schools for their training such as dance schools, or music schools.
Performance allows the artist to become another person as they go up on stage. Costumes make up, and stage names allow this to happen. The most exciting part of performing is the audience. Often performers respond to the live audience depending upon the atmosphere of the audience. There is a special symbiosis between the audience and performer that makes live performance like no other entertainment. Some 'plastic' artists attempt to perform their work in live performance because of this added element.
Dance performance comes in all shapes and sizes. There are many different types of dance. But all dance performing uses the movement of the human body as expression of social, spiritual, or political messages. Some dance is just for the joy of moving to music. This communication from the performer to the audience through movement takes many years to develop. Training for dance performance depends upon the genre of dance. These include ballet, ballroom, jazz, hip hop, tap dance, folk, contemporary, etc. Dance studios offer dance classes all over the world for the training of performing dancers.
Venues for performance do not have to include a stage. Street performers use the streets as their performing space. Hip hop is generally not performed in formal spaces. This is a form of dance that was born on the streets and it continues to make its home there. In much the same way, figure skating performs on a sheet of ice in an arena. Synchronized swimming could also be considered a performing art and is performed in a swimming pool. Performing spaces could potentially anywhere. Folk dances were part of festivals that took place outdoors. Wherever there is a performer and an audience, there is performance.
