Latin Dance Classes

Latin dance is a general category of dance that is usually done to certain kinds of music and is characterized by certain movements. It is a division of international ballroom dances and competitions. Most of the dances do originate in the Latin American region. The dances include cha cha, rumba, samba, mambo, danza, paso doble, bolero, and many more. The ever popular Argentine Tango and Salsa are sometimes included in this category as well. This term may also apply to a group of folk dances. The national heritage dances of South America, especially Bolivia and Columbia preserve dance heritage by standardizing and dancing these folk dances.

Latin ballroom dance is popular all over the US. Many college campuses offer dance classes in this style of ballroom. This style is regulated by the International Latin American Competitions. Students who take classes either from a college or from a dance school or dance studio can qualify themselves in the steps of different dances by taking medals exams. These exams test the knowledge and skill of the dancers and help them to come one step closer to being champion level that can compete on the international scale. Each year several different championships are held in this form of dance.

The characteristics of Latin dances usually involve hip action. Most of these dances employ either natural or exaggerated hip action which turns up the heat as is usually the case with all things Latino. The dances can be either fast or slow in tempo. The rhythms of this music inspire the intricate and syncopated dances. Many of these dances have held counts where everything is suspended for a moment. Often the first step of the dance sequence is not taken on the first count but on the second. The polyrhythmic music lends intricacy to the dances.

Folk dances also fall into the category of Latin dance. These are the foundation from which the ballroom dances come. Each country in Central and South America has its own set of dances and styles. Argentina is famous for its tango music, and traditional tango dances. Bolivia has the strongest link to its heritage when it comes to music and dance of any Latino country. Brazil has a very diverse culture and produces a unique set of dances. Cuba is the leader in innovative music and dance, many of the ballroom dances originated here. Bachata and Bolero come from the Dominican Republic.
