Gymnastics is a sport that requires immense flexibility, strength, balance, agility, coordination, and passion. It is a huge conglomeration of worldwide standards for several different events such as balance beam, uneven bars, floor exercise, and vault for women as well as floor exercise, pommel horse, vault, still rings, parallel bars, and high bar for men. It is one of the most popular summer Olympic sports and fittingly since they originated with the ancient Greeks. Greece was home to trick riding with horses and circus performing.
Kids of all ages and genders love gymnastics. It allows them to run and test their strength as well as focus their energy intensely. Children are the ideal candidates for this sport because it requires immense flexibility which adults begin to lose as they age. Kids as small as five years old are found all over the world doing kindergym and tumbling. As they get older they may be siphoned into the competitive sphere of the sport. And as everyone has seen during the Olympics, competitive may not be a strong enough word for it. Specific body types are preferred for competitive sport. These body types have the definite advantage in competition and those without the right body type will naturally fall behind.
All standardized gymnastics are regulated by the Federation Internationale de Gymnastique. They set up the standards for gyms and control the competitions. Anywhere in the world there are three levels designated by the Federation. The first is Age Group which includes ages 11-16. Junior level is ages 12-19 and Senior level is 15 years old on up. There is some overlap in those groups that allow for talent and differing level. In acrobatic sport levels must be passed with a balance and a dynamic routine. Juniors and Seniors are also asked to perform a combined routine.
The actual dance class and dance school levels may vary from one place to another. But the qualifications of the Federation provide further motivation for competitive bound. Some gymnastics are a team sport. This allows for each team member to specialize in one event for the sake of the team. The competition is spread out across the members of the team and is not as personally demanding. But the competition is still quite stiff. That also makes it quite exciting for the observers. Adults can participate in this sport by getting into general classes which do display routines. These are performed in large groups and can be quite fun.
