Country western music and dance is like no other. It is in its own world and plays by its own rules, but it is worth the visit to this other worldly place. It is some of the best and most fun music and dance there is. The music is usually easily recognizable, although, sometimes the rock and country genres get a little crossed to the delight of all. The dance of country is the same. Dance forms and styles are not exclusive, just about anything will work but it is worth the effort to learn some of the established western dance moves just the same.
There are two forms of country western dancing: couple and group. Couple dancing is a type of social dance. The basic forms of two step, waltz, cowboy cha cha, polka, ten step, promenade dances, swing, etc. are all classified as country dancing. These are easy to learn and fun to do. Dance studios offer dance classes in country couples dancing. Or you can just show up at the club early and get a little instruction from the regulars. Group dancing is probably the most popular of all country dancing. Line dances and square dances are always being developed and spread like wildfire all over the nation and beyond.
There is no need to get nervous about learning country western dance. The whole attitude of country dance is informal and relaxed. It is about smooth timekeeping rather than exact steps. Style and attitude are as important to country dance as the actual steps are. Cowboy boots keep the steps flat footed and gliding in quality. The upper body remains mostly stationary and there is little hip movement. The cowboy waltz is done without the rise and fall that it is normally associated with. The steps are smooth and light with a consistent glide but not a shuffle.
Dance floor etiquette is very important in country western dance. There may be several different dances going on at the same time depending upon what each couple or group decides to do. General rules include splitting up the dance floor into sections where different dances can take place. Progressive dances like the two step move around the outside of the room. Line dances usually take up the center. Other more stationary dances like the swing can take the corners of the room. Somehow, everyone get along on the country dance floor no matter what dance they want to do.
