Baton Dance Classes
Baton/Twirling is most often associated with parades and old time entertainment, but it is alive and well today and has even become a competitive sport. It really is an art to be mastered since it involves dance, music, gymnastics, and the technicality of spinning a baton and doing tricks with it. It is the combination of many demanding forms into one exciting package. It doesn't always have to involve a metal baton it can also include flag spinning, also called color guard. Even rhythmic gymnastics can fall under the category of baton.
Characteristics of the basics of baton/twirling include using the baton, or other instrument, for the creation of visual imagery, patterns, or pictures through space. This is executed with precision and fluidity. The baton is used both close to the body and away from the body as when the baton is released up the air. Speed is crucial to the execution of baton performance.
The body is also involved as dance movements are incorporated into the basics of the baton movement. This requires the twirler to be possessed of grace, physical strength, beauty, flexibility, and coordination. Gymnastic elements are also added in to bring in the wow factor. This makes baton fun and risky.
The whole point of baton/twirling is to combine many elements into one style of movement. There are the technical elements of the baton manipulation. There is also the aesthetic of the dance movement. Then there is the virtuoso element, gymnastics that brings in the excitement. All together it is a show that is breathtaking and a favorite for audiences of all ages and backgrounds. It is such an advanced art form that it has reached competitive proportions. The World Baton Twirling Federation, the World Twirling Association, the Global Alliance of National Baton Twirling & Majorette Associations regulate and host world championships and International Cups. The sport was not standardized until 1979. The first world championships followed the following year.
