It is most associated with the circus, gymnastics, and acro dance. Ballet dancers employ the use of this type of movement as well as divers. In Chinese culture, acrobatics have been around for at least 2000 years. Village festivals were never complete without someone contorting themselves into amazing and defying positions. In the 1800's circus show continued the tradition. These shows included tightrope walking, tumbling, and other gymnastic activities. Eventually, these became a competitive sport in Europe and beyond.
